Gelena-generated cyclonic winds batter Rodrigues


Cyclonic winds hit Rodrigues


Cyclone Gelena passed very close to the west coast of Rodrigues.


Initial projection led the cyclone almost half way between Mauritius and Rodrigues




Winds of over 160km/hr caused severe damage to plants and some houses.

The cyclone moved unusually fast at nearly 30km/hr.

The cyclone seems to have weakenened and it cntinues to move South Eastward.

Nearly 150 people took shelter in Refugee centres around the Island.


Nearly 90% of the inhabitants are without electricity.

Fortunately there was no record of casualties.

Characteristically, the Indian Ocean has gone cloud free after a period of strong activity with the presence of cyclones Gelena and Funani.
